Essential Oil Plant Parts and Energetics
Plant parts and how they can support and elicit certain thoughts, feelings, moods, and emotions:
One of the simplest ways to choose an essential oil to support or elicit a specific thought, feeling, mood or emotion, is selecting them, based on the plant part in which they were produced by and distilled from.
The “plant parts” of plants (which are gathered and used during the process of essential oil distillation), hold their own Spiritual Energies and offer Metaphysical Healing Benefits depending on the energetic properties (or “Spirit’) of the plant part.
When a specific plant part is used to produce an essential oil, the oils that are produced hold the same “Spirit” or energies of the plant part used.
For example; Essential oils distilled from the rinds of citrus fruits, bring very uplifting, joyful and cleansing energies to the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. Essentially, the Spirit of these citrus oils (like all other plant parts), have their own “energetic personality”, which offers a very specific type of energy and ability to bring greater harmony to The Whole.
In the post sections that follow, we will explore the basic plant parts that are used when producing essential oils, as well as their unique energies (aka. what I personally refer to as their “energetics”) and spiritual, “Personality Types”.
Please note- The definition and topic of plant and essential oil “Energetics” vary greatly from practice to practice, and person to person, as well as the level of complexity within the subject. In the following list, I have given you my own personal take on essential oil energetics. If you have a different connection with the different plant parts and their energies, please feel free to come up with your own system that resonates best with you! Again, when using essential oils spiritually and energetically, they are meant to be explored and personally experienced. Please use what I have offered as a starting point, and be open to discovering and honoring your own unique experiences with
1. Needles/Tree Branch
Evergreen trees (trees with needles) are naturally very adaptive, which allow them to grow and thrive in areas of the world where it is more difficult for other plant types to survive. Oils made from tree needles offer you strength, support, and reassurance that you have the personal power and ability to do hard things. In fact, you’ve been designed for it.
Examples of Needle Essential Oils:
- Douglas Fir
- White Fir
- Balsam Fir
2. Wood (aka. Trunk)
The wood (or trunk) of a tree is designed to be the center and support system of the tree. It moves energy, water, and nutrients to its branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. When you are in need of recentering and replenishing your Whole, wood oils can help!
List of Wood Essential Oils:
- Ho Wood
The roots act as a plant’s physical and energetic “anchor”, connecting it securely to the soil, which is necessary for its life. Use root oils when you are feeling ungrounded. They are great at helping you reconnect your spirit and mind to your body, your human experience, and the earth.
Seeds are symbolic of the beginning of life. They house the full potential of the plant, and it’s ability to grow and “become” all it was designed to be.
The aromatic oils contained within the rinds of citrus fruits are very refreshing, stimulating and energizing to the senses, while the fruit offers cleansing benefits to the digestive system. Use citrus oils to boost your mood and immunity, as they promote joy, fun, creativity and the importance of taking care of your Whole.
- Wild Orange
- Red Mandarin
A “bud” is an underdeveloped portion of the plant. The Spirit of a bud is one of patience and the understanding and acceptance of there being more to learn and more to do. Using bud oils can help you in the “in-between” times, when you are preparing for the next step, but may need to wait or prepare better, prior to taking additional action. They give you permission to honor the time in between, as it is an important part of your development and journey.
7. Herbs and Plant Leaves
The leaves of plants, especially those of herbs offer incredible healing benefits, specifically to the heart and our emotions. Herbs bring out the flavor in our foods, and foods bring
Grasses flow and move with the wind. The spirit of grasses
Bark offers protection to the inside of a tree and is the outmost layer that protects the tree from the outside elements. The spirit of bark is one of protection. Use bark oils to help protect your energy field from negative, low vibration or distracting energies that are not in alignment with your needs or highest good.
10. Flowers and Floral Leaves
Flowers are a symbol of feminine beauty, gentleness, and attraction. The aroma of flowers attract pollinators, and people use them as a symbol of romance. The spirit of a flower is one of
- Clary Sage
- Geranium (technically distilled from the leaf of the flower, but still has a powerful floral energetic)
- Roman Chamomile
- Ylang Ylang
- Blue Tansy
11. Mint and Myrtle
Mints and Myrtles are beautiful plant spirits who help to open our airways, connect us to our breath while bringing purification to the things that make us ill and/or offend us (such as germs and bad breath). Use mints and myrtles to invigorate your senses and to bring purification and clarity to your mind, body, spirit, and emotions.
- Wintergreen (not a true mint, but has heavy mint energetics)
Berries contain large amounts of water (which, in my view, is our gateway for communication with the Spirit Realm), which makes them great oils for psychic work (Connecting with your Higher Self, Clairvoyance and/or Mediumship). They are high in fiber and antioxidants, and support healthy digestion, brain and memory function, and offer great support to the Limbic System! When looking for an oil to aid in emotional cleansing, spiritual communication and the release of negative habits or limiting beliefs, consider working with a berry oil!
- Black Pepper
- Juniper Berry
Not all trees produce resin, but when a producing tree is punctured or cut, the resin’s job is to seep out to seal and heal the wound. Resins are a symbol of miracles, hope, and healing. They are energetically strong, deep and masculine and have traditionally been used in meditation, prayer, and rituals, as a way to show deep respect and gratitude to “God”, “Gods”, “The Universe”. The Spirit of Resins bring the messages; “You are loved, you are healed, you are forgiven, you are supported, you are enough, you are not alone.”
